Speakmon Memorial Regatta Recap

Last weekend, the team made the one hour trip to Columbus to race in the Speakmon Memorial Regatta. To start off the day, the lightweight 4+ took sixth in a solid field. Next to race was the open 4+, the same open 4+ that took first at the Head of the Ohio. They continued their winning streak by placing first with a time of 17:28.23, ten seconds ahead of the second place boat. The next boat to race was the Novice 8+, their first race of the year. They placed third, a promising result for a team that has only been rowing by eights for less than a week. After the novice raced, the two varsity 8+'s took to the water. In dominating fashion, the first varsity 8+ took first by 15 seconds and the second varsity boat took third finishing behind a solid Three Rivers Rowing Association boat.

Overall, the team was pleased to come away more medals, but they still know more work needs to be done to be an elite crew. It was a promising start for the novice team, and they expect to improve on their results as they gain more experience on the water. Next up for the varsity team is the Head of the Hooch on November 7, 2009.
